AI in the energy industry

In short

AI in the energy industry means forecasts, grid state estimation, exception handling or customer service with machine learning and language models. According to a PwC study from April 2026, 79 percent of energy companies have introduced AI, and 61 percent of those are still experimenting. Three dates matter legally: KI-MIG since 29 July 2026, the Art. 50 transparency duties since 2 August 2026 and the Annex III high-risk duties from 2 December 2027. Grid AI is only high-risk under conditions, though. Assuming it across the board slows down projects that are not affected at all.

Since 29 July 2026 a utility's AI has a supervisor: the Bundesnetzagentur. Most projects are still stuck in the pilot all the same. That is why AI is not a field of its own for us but runs across all of them. Every article here belongs to one of the ten topic fields and says which market role is affected, what hits a municipal utility differently from a large supplier and which deadline sits behind it. We take use cases from prototype into operation and build the governance that holds up in day-to-day work.

AI in the grid

Grid state, forecasting, planning, maintenance, control systems and grid connection.

What applies to which market role

  • Distribution system operatorsGrid state estimation, load and generation forecasts, congestion analysis · Maintenance of cables and transformers, grid connection requests · High-risk only where the AI is a safety component and the operator is designated a critical entity
  • Metering point operatorsPlausibility checks on meter readings · Exception cases in market communication · Smart meter data as the basis of many models
  • Suppliers and salesChat and voice bots labelled under Art. 50 · Churn prediction and billing · Data protection for customer data
  • Balancing responsible parties and tradingForecasts for procurement and balancing energy in quarter-hour resolution
  • Heat suppliersFlow temperature and load forecasts in the heat network · Operating large heat pumps
  • ManagementAI governance, register and approval path · Measures on AI literacy under Art. 4 · Supervision by the Bundesnetzagentur since KI-MIG
